Corrie's David just 'wants to be loved'

'Coronation Street' actor Jack P Shepherd has claimed that his character David Platt is misunderstood and "just wants to be loved".
According to the show's official website, the actor told InsideSoap Yearbook: "David can do some malicious things but I think he just wants to be loved. He craves a bit of affection."
"He's never had much attention from his mum, Gail. She was always running around after David's brother, Nick, and Sarah and then she moved on to caring about Bethany, so David just feels like he was pushed to one side," he said.
"He's found that by being bad he gets lots of attention. That's the only time Gail really notices him."
Shepherd said: "David could go down a really dark path, but there are different sides to him. David is an emotional character and he can do comedy - he's quite a comedian sometimes."
"I think he does have different dimensions to his character, which makes him so much fun to watch. But probably his main strength is being a nasty, evil, twisted little git."

Will Smith reveals marriage secret

Will Smith has revealed the secret of his ten-year marriage to Jada Pinkett-Smith in an interview with Ellen de Generes.
Smith, who was married to Sheree Zampino from 1992 to 1995 and had a son with her, was asked about his current relationship on de Generes' popular TV show 'Ellen'.
The actor, who has two children with Pinkett-Smith, said: "What I found is divorce just can't be an option.
"It's really that simple. And I think that's the problem with LA - there are so many options. So a huge part of the success for (Jada) and I is that we just removed the other options."
"We're like - listen, we're going to be together one way or the other so we might as well try to be happy."

Hard-hitting Brazilian film opens Cannes festival

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Hard-hitting Brazilian film "Blindness" gets the Cannes film festival under way on Wednesday, kicking off 12 hectic days of movies, publicity and late-night revelry in the Riviera resort.

Directed by Brazil's Fernando Meirelles, of "City of God" renown, the movie is an adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning writer Jose Saramago's novel of the same name, and tells the apocalyptic story of a plague of blindness sweeping the world.

Julianne Moore plays a doctor's wife, who, like the film's audience, is able to see the harrowing events going on around her and who gradually becomes aware of the responsibilities that brings.

The movie is an appropriate choice to open a festival that is showcasing South American cinema.

Joining Meirelles in the main competition is another Brazilian entry "Line of Passage", by Walter Salles, and two Argentine productions -- Pablo Trapero's prison drama "Leonera" and thriller "The Headless Woman" by Lucrecia Martel.

They are up against Clint Eastwood's "Changeling", starring Angelina Jolie, and Steven Soderbergh's "Che", a two-part, four-and-a-half hour epic on Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara, with Benicio del Toro in the title role.

The other two U.S. entries are James Gray's "Two Lovers", featuring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix, and Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, New York" with Philip Seymour Hoffman.

INDIANA AND ITALY

Jackie Chan, Jet Li lost in "Forbidden Kingdom"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - What do you get when you mix "The Wizard of Oz," "The Karate Kid," "Rush Hour" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?" You get a hodgepodge titled "The Forbidden Kingdom," which will please its core audience but won't enthrall anyone over the age of 16. (Even that might be stretching the point.)

Young males adore martial arts movies with plenty of well-choreographed mayhem. To ensure the involvement of that key demographic, the film provides a teenage American hero, Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano), magically transported from his south Boston neighborhood to ancient China, where he gets to study kung fu under the guidance of two masters of Asian cinema, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The first-ever teaming of Chan and Li is a shrewd commercial ploy, and the movie looks poised for strong opening-weekend business. But the weak script will keep it from enduring for long.

In the opening scene, after visiting an elderly Chinese pawnbroker (Chan), Jason is pummeled by a neighborhood bully and wakes up in China, where he is thrust into the middle of a battle to rescue an old wizard, the Monkey King (Li). He finds himself in the possession of a magical staff (much like Dorothy's ruby slippers) sought by heroes and villains alike. Friends (including younger incarnations of Chan and Li) materialize to aid him in his journey, but he also is pursued by a wicked white-haired witch (Li Bing Bing) on his way to the Emerald City -- er, the golden fortress, where an evil warlord keeps the Monkey King imprisoned in stone.

John Fusco's dialogue is often laughable, encumbered by spiritual mumbo jumbo ("You have come far through the gate of no gate") or incongruous contemporary slang of the "Dude, what's happening?" variety. But few people go to martial arts movies to savor the elegant language, and as an action extravaganza, the film delivers. Cinematographer Peter Pau and choreographer Woo-Ping Yuen honed their skills on "Crouching Tiger" and many other Asian and American movies. "Kingdom" was filmed in China and benefits from lush costume and set design.

Li as the Zen master and Chan as his more comical sidekick build on their familiar personas and demonstrate the chops that their fans appreciate. Angarano, who recently appeared in the very different "Snow Angels," is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most promising young American actors. The rest of the performers meet the demands of their roles, which are not exactly arduous. Under Rob Minkoff's direction, everything unfolds predictably, which is why the film ultimately becomes tedious. The fight scenes (including Jason's climactic battle with the bullies back in south Boston) are fun, but the filler in between is deadlier than one of Li's lethal kicks.

Sarah Jessica Parker: ‘I don’t obsess over fashion’

Sarah Jessica ParkerSex and The City actress Sarah Jessica Parker has revealed that unlike her character, Carrie Bradshaw, in the hit show, she doesn’t obsess over upmarket labels.

“I dont wear designer gear around the house, its not practical,” she says. “I am a mother first and getting my son out of the house in the morning and to school, as any working mother will tell you, allows little time for vanity.

“Its very liberating to let your attention be elsewhere. Thats why occasions like this premiere are wonderful, because you get to be all shined up and have marvelous things to wear.

Canadian music biz still in doldrums

Sales drop 15% last week, down 30% from '07

TORONTO -- The Canadian music biz continues to be rocked by lackluster sales, with album sales dropping 15% this week compared to the previous week, and tumbling 30% from the same period in 2007, according to the latest figures from Nielsen Soundscan.
The top-selling album in Canada for the week was Death Cab for Cutie's "Narrow Stairs," on Warner Music Canada with about 11,800 copies sold, while Madonna's "Hard Candy" (Warner Bros) stayed at No. 2 with 11,300 copies sold.
However, sets like the self-titled third album by Montreal's Simple Plan (Lava/Atlantic) remained in the Top 40 with slightly more than 1,000 copies.
Although largely unwilling to go on the record, Canadian music industry insiders admit to being shocked by the decline. "Our office has been talking about it today," said one distributor. "Wow. A thousand units to go top 40 in Canada? I don't like to paint a negative outlook on these things, but ...."
Canada's major labels have been struggling; at this point, admits one major label publicist, "I don't know what it takes to sell records." Overall, album sales in Canada for the year to date are down 17% to 10.4 million, compared with 12.5 million in the same period in 2007.
One publishing industry source said the situation simply reflects the fact that the structure of major labels in Canada and elsewhere have to change.
"A major label can't be happy with a band selling 200 copies off the stage at their show, because their cost structures can't support that," the source noted. "That's crazy and that's what's wrong with the business these days."

Daily Mail respond to My Chemical Romance emo marchers

The Daily Mail have issued a statement this afternoon (May 31) responding to a planned protest by My Chemical Romance fans against the paper's coverage of emo.

Following the suicide of suicide of Hannah Bond, a fan of the band and comments from the coroner at her inquest about the genre's influence in her death, the British newspaper have published several articles about emo including one which claimed that "no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo".

However the paper has insisted that their coverage has been restrained, balanced and is in the public interest.

"The Daily Mails coverage of the 'Emo' movement has been balanced, restrained and above all, in the public interest. Genuine concerns were raised at the inquest earlier this month on 13 year old Emo follower Hannah Bond who had been self-harming and then tragically killed herself," they explained in the statement.

"In common with other newspapers we ran an accurate news story recording the Coroner's remarks and the parents' comments. We also published two other articles, one of which explained the background to the Hannah tragedy in calm and un-sensational language.

"The other was a first person opinion piece by a well-known writer, written from the perspective of a mother concerned for her children. We have also run two prominent page lead letters from an Emo music fan and from a fan of My Chemical Romance defending their point of view.

"Our music critic admires the music of the band and publicised the bands UK tour last year. Since this protest was announced a great deal of misinformation has appeared on the internet, much of which confuses what the Daily Mail has actually published with the comments of web site readers and 'blogs' over which we have no control and which have stirred up emotions."

They added: "We note it has been pointed out by others that all this provides wonderful publicity for Warners and their impending release of My Chemical Romance's latest album.

"The Daily Mail is a broad church and is always ready to listen to the views of readers. We do, however, suggest those who want to protest or comment read everything we have published and act on fact not rumour."

NME.COM will have coverage of today's protest.
